I wanted to update you on what's new in the computer lab and network on the school campus as well as what I have planned for the new year.

The computer lab continues to grow and evolve, as does the wireless network in our school. Again, with the help of my husband, Eric Schramm, it is growing by leaps and bounds. We use hardware, called the Firebox, which filters all of our Internet traffic. This keeps our children safe from the negative things on the Internet. The Internet is a very useful tool and our children use it very often, but it imperative they are not exposed to the negative things that are out there. If you are interested, stop in the lab sometime and see the graphic of what the network layout is currently. I think you will be both surprised and impressed! We have also added some great tools to both monitor each child's desktop, as well as monitoring the network, right from my desk!!!

I will continue to teach and enforce Internet safety. All of the children will be learning Microsoft Office products (of course adjusted for their grade level!). They also will have a lot of fun (I hope).

This year, I will also teach 2 electives to the Junior High, forensics (public speaking) and typing.

I hope you all had a great summer. Please feel free to email me at
schramm@stjohnthebaptistschool.org if you have any questions, comments or a strong desire to help in the Computer Lab :) .

School Year 2008-2009

Welcome Back St. John's Parents and Students!

As the students already know, the Computer Lab had an "Extreme Makeover" this summer. With the assistance of Eric Schramm and Joe Fratangelo, we painted and had carpeting installed in the room. The computers were reinstalled all along the walls to create an environment more conducive to teaching and learning. (Oh, it also hides the cables and cords better too!)

Equipment Information and Update

The computer lab has 24 computers, as well as a network server and 3 printers. The lab is hardwired, but we also have a wireless network that encompasses both the school and the annex. Each classroom has a PC and each teacher has a laptop. We also have a Smart Board, which is a wonderful learning tool. We secure our internet access with a product from Symantec Corporation so that your children are safe when they are on the internet. (Internet safety is taught and stressed!)

Recently, a second Smart Board (thanks to Mrs. Stonebraker!) was added to our inventory. These boards are for any teacher's use. The Smart Boards allow for lots of interaction between the children and their lessons.

If you have not had time to stop in yet, please make a point to come down and see the wonderful new look of our lab!

Karen Schramm

Welcome Back to School!!!!

Welcome Back Parents and Children of St. John the Baptist School,

I cannot believe that we are ready to start a new school year. I hope you have had a great summer and are ready to start a great school year. This year in computer promises to be a fun and informative year. We will learn how computers can used for both enjoyment as well as productive work.

For parents of new students, kindergarten and first grade, please tell your children to RELAX! It doesn't matter how much they know or learned in the past, everyone will be able to develop at their own pace. They will be surprised how quickly they can learn, whether they use a PC at home or not.

As always, please feel free to contact me via email (schramm@stjohnthebaptistschool.org) or at school (412-793-0555) at extension 328 if you have any questions, concerns or comments.

Mrs. Schramm

Welcome Back to School!

Greetings from the computer lab.
